I just moved into the 21st century and bought a new smart phone, a Droid II. I took some pics with the camera, and they are of much better quality than from my two year old Pentax Optio. Also the phone has a better GPS map and turn by turn navigation than my Garmin GPS unit. I can surf the web just about anywhere and access my Google maps, e-mails, etc. I can also text and make phone calls with it...lol.

I still have a lot of other apps to explore. Killed more than a few birds with that stone (Droid). Just FYI if you are considering buying a new camera, GPS, etc. BTW I got 2 phones for $100 with a Verizon contract. Just FYI.

Welcome Tweed . GPS units are obsolete as soon as you buy them unless you update the maps on them . I like the GPS on my IPhone because I know it's always up to date . But I'm going to get a Garmin with lifetime traffic and map updates so I don't have to pay the 10 dollar a month fee to use the GPS on my phone .

My IPhone has definitely become a good fishing tool I use the weather and tide charts all the time including the the free GPS option threw google to mark my fishing holes . Wednesday I even bought movie tickets off of fandango on the way to the theatre luckily I did because the movie was sold out when I got there .

Sounds like one of those commercials...lol.

How 'bout opinions on I-Phones vs. Android Phones?

C'mon, its early....besides, these things have to start organically, wait for Jay to throw a dig towards the iPhone first, then we'll get that party started.

Fred, there is NO reason to pay $10 month for GPS. They've been raping ya. If you don't like the integrated system simply buy the TomTom app. Having said that, if you do a lot of travel to different locations a dedicated GPS is the way to go. Check Amazon, get a refurb unit with lifetime traffic. Don't know if you are aware but the "lifetime traffic" is built into the cable that connects the unit to your power outlet in your car. It is not assigned to any specific GPS, so if you get a different unit later you can use that cord to provide the traffic. Also note, of course, that with this system you will have to have the unit plugged into a power outlet in the car for traffic to work. If you plug the unit in at home and charge it, then use battery only on the road - well that would be a problem.

Ok. I have had iphone, iphone 3G and currently iphone 3GS, so I have been pretty loyal. Most of my employees chose the iphone option though two did choose Droid. So I have a lot of experience with iphone. The iphone is great. Stable, doesn't crash, has great apps available for free or low cost. It has an incredible easy interface and set up is a breeze. Negatives include being stuck itunes. Dear God itunes sucks so bad. What a fat, bloated, slow system! And you MUST use it update your OS and firmware. No over the air updates. You can buy apps and tunes over the air. Also, with iphone you are stuck with AT&T. Frankly, I like AT&T and have had great service with them. Data has been great everywhere except in NYC but I hear that they got that bandwidth issue addressed there.

Having said all of that, I am seriously considering a droid product for my next phone. With droid you are not tied into a proprietary system. Even something as simple as having an on board storage slot for microSD cards is awesome and something Apple will apparently never consider. Being able to load songs, movies, etc to the device via cable connection or via microSD card is huge. No longer would I have to populate the music into itunes, then sync it to my phone. The HTC droid phone with HDMI out is wicked cool for the frequent traveler who wants to carry their porn (or other movies I guess) to hotels to watch on the hotel TV's that all have vacant HDMI connections. Then is saw the Dell Streak. That thing is wicked cool. Kind of like a cross between an iphone and ipad in size. Really cool. If it has sd slot and HDMI I am done and will be a convert.

A dirty little secret for the next time you're in Manhattan and can't access data......

Turn off 3G, it's under Settings>General>Network>Enable 3G 'off'. It's saved me a few times. Granted it's slow, and is only good in a pinch, but sometimes 3G is so bogged down I can't even load a basic Google search.

i have a droidII also as far as aps i thinkgoogle skymap and smart measure are neat ohh and beer cloud a must have for brew enthusiasts one drawback on the droid which doesnt concern me but ill pass it on is that its not as secure with contact info texts and other info as the black berry or iphone i guess that why you should have virus protection for it has anyone played with a windows phone yet? whats the verdict on that?

Have used the Samsung Omnia for 2 years. runs windows mobile... apps and maps update automatically. 5.o megapxl camera is solid, as is mo-cap/vid stuff. Still use the thing as my nationwide broadband modem (Verizon). It's speedy & smart. No complaints, but i fear it's only a matter of time until it goes 'sploosh'.

I have had the iPhone 3G and iPhone 4. I have dropped both in the creek and they still work. I don't recommend doing it though

Zip lock bag is the cheapest waterproofing you can do for your phone.

Who answers a phone on the creek?

(actually, I have...and you can talk through the baggie)

I have had the iPhone 3G and iPhone 4.

I've had iphone, iphone 3G and 3GS. Do you think the 4 upgrade is worth doing? Well I guess I shouldn't say "worth" and you can get them for next to nothing at Radio Shack right now with the deal and trade in or sale of used iphone. What advantages does the iphone 4 have?

I have the iPhone 3GS (2009) and love it. There are few folks that work for me that have the 4G and that is good model too. The newer model has the the better camera and screen resolution.

Like a lot of technology, if you are moving up year to year or model to model there is not a lot of difference. Every other year or model is usually a sizable enough change to upgrade. I am going to do that for the June 2011 iPhone.

The iPhone and Droids today are awesome. So much better than than even a couple of years ago. But understand it is not just the phone that makes it all come together. This is often often overlooked.

The iPhone has been successful not because it has a great great GUI, it does, but because has a boatload of apps, a trusted and easy to use app store, high-bandwidth network, great customer support online and a store you can walk into get wonderful customers service experience.

Both the droids and the iPhone have strengths and weaknesses. I kind of make the analogy of going to Disney World or Myrtle Beach for a vacation as to which one you choose.

All in all I am such a geek I cold not imagine not have one of these with all the time. What better way to spot burn, but while I am on the stream.

Two pictures below that I took with my iPhone on the stream. The best camera to have is the one with you.

To those of you that run android:

I recently installed Camera360, which is an upgrade on the stock camera app. Lots of neat features, with some real professional quality (relatively speaking) effects. And it's free!

Attached is an example of the "tilt shift" effect. Not bad for a phone imo.

Without being snotty, let me see that without the tilt effect, coz I'm not really seeing it.

I don't have it. I took the picture with the effect on and deleted the plain one.

The text on the UI spec was much more clear, and doesn't transition into blurriness as much. The foreground stuff was in focus, whereas the text on the orvis pen was slightly blurry.

It basically enables you to set a small focused point in the Y plane, where the rest becomes progressively more blurry.

Edit: took another picture to better illustrate the effect. Doesn't it make you just wanna unit test the hell out of something?

Oh, I'm quite aware of perspective control in photography, how many paragraphs would you like on the Scheimpflug effect? :)

That's why I'm curious to see what it does, and how much of it is to do that annoyingly novel cute carp that Adult Swim uses in its bumps.

Just realized that the free version no longer supports higher resolutions than what you see there. LAME.
