Cabelas Rod Line Up Change - Winston & Loomis

For those interested, the Cabelas in Hamburg is now stocking the Loomis NRX series rods, as well as other Loomis. Additionally, they are now selling Winston rods, including the VSL and Passport Chinese made junk, in addition to the new graphite only GVX and the boron/graphite IIt. It is my understanding they will carry the BIIIx, once production is ramped up.

Pretty much leaves Scott as the only "big" company that is not exclusive to independent dealers.
 
They're also going to be adding a line of fibreglass rods under their store brand.
 
I'd like too know more about the new fiberglass line.

I'd be interested in having a 5 weight glass rod for trout/bass on larger streams. I like that slow delayed casting stroke on slower rods.

I almost bought a newer Fenwick HMG the other year and then realized they are graphite, I've still heard good things about the HMG's though.

I wonder where Cabela's will be getting the blanks from. Who even makes glass anymore?

I've been fishing glass for years, folks make fun of me, but glass rods just seem to match my casting stroke/style/etc.
they are not for everyone, lots of folks like fast graphite, and that's fine. they just aren't for me.
lots of new glass coming out besides cabela's. scott is coming out with a new glass line, and hardy introduced a new line of glass rods about a year or two ago. not to mention all the custom makers out there.
we won't even mention the vintage stuff here!!LOL (have a phillipson on the way! :-D )
 
I was at the Cabela's last thursday and got to play around with the NRX and the new Winston's. I've trashed the Loomis rods before and all criticism was supported by the rods on the display rack. No way are those rods worth $700.00!

The Winston's on the other hand, were gorgeous and built with flawless detail. The cork on the IIIX rods was some of the best I've ever seen on production rods.

Lamiglas seems to be a common source for re-branded glass although they have cut back their own brand's line of glass blanks quite a bit.

There are a handfull of other sources for glass blanks and some foreign made blanks/rods are also popping up now. I'm talking quality rods here, not that $10 wally-world junk...

G-loomis has some great rods besides the new NRX.
The Cross Current and the GLX series are some great rods .
I think any rod designed by this guy should be great

The NRX reminded me of the St Croix Legend Elite, just ugly. I like the flat matte finish of the NRX (kind of like the St Croix Ultra) but why the baby blue wraps? Ugggg.

According to Dave (who is a die hard Winston guy) who works there, they have not had any BIIIx in the store yet. They have the BIIt which has been in the line up for a few years and the new $500 graphite rod. Wait until you see the carbon fiber rod tube for the BIIIx. Pretty darn sharp and much more practical than the old powder coated steel tubes used on the other Winston lines.
 
Diamondback is set to introduce a new line of fiberglass flyrods too. Bikerfish I have a "Phillipson" Swamp Fox made in 1971 and near mint. I love my "Phillipson" and I'm sure you will too.

I could be mistaken though.

I had read an entire thread on a forum somewhere featuring a product development specialist for the Cabela's company discussing these in some detail.

Either way, the BIIt and BIIIx look identical, only the blank make up is different. Colors, wraps, quality, etc is all the same.

Shut it! Winston pricing is no different than Sage, Scott, Orvis yet everyone cites "Winston Snobbery". Besides, who the hell pays full price for a rod anyway?
 
I see the Cabela's glass rods have an almost John Deere farm tractor green look to them. I'd like to see what they have in a little bit longer heavier rod.

I already have 3 lightweight rods ranging from 7' to 8' feet in length.

And then I got this 9' #7, which is almost too much rod for anything but Big Bubba Bass.

If they have something like a 8.5 ft. #5 I'd be all over it. Or even a 9 footer. That will fill in the big gap between my 4 and 7 weight.
 
Oddly, I was wondering why no one offers long, light glass rods. I'd be tickled iwth an 8'6"+ 3wt. :)
 
you can get up to 8'9" in a 3 wt from mike mcfarland. rods are pricy, but blanks aren't too bad.
I'm sure other builders offer similar models.
