In the past several years road crews in NJ and Pa have been treating the roads with a “brine” solution, whatever that is. Is there any research as to the relative impacts of road salt vs. calcium chloride vs. brine in the regions rivers, streams and creeks? And by extension the impacts on trout in those waterways.

There's been an increase in salinity of ground water over the years, I don't know how damaging it's been so far, but like all impacts to the environment they will express themselves.
As for streams it can largely be ephemeral, but it could get to the point that it kills lots of fish.

I have been wondering about the same thing lately. Road outside my house is whitewashed with salt, and you all know where the runoff ends up. As I used to drive the turnpike out to Bedford 15 years ago to get to college, I always wondered why the dead trees along a certain line back from the shoulder...I was curious if it was all the salt laden snow thrown up on the bank from the BIG snowplows.
