River temps have been depressed for most of the past two weeks. As such, it is unlikely that many bass have spawned or attempted to spawn. The next warming trend, if it sticks, should bring on the SMB spawning behavior in rivers and lakes. In addition, the spawn is protracted, with larger females spawning first. This adaptation allows at least some of the population to find ideal spawning and nursery conditions at some point in the cycle. Young produced earlier in the season, if they survive, have a growth and condition advantage that can enhance their ability to survive the first winter.
