does anyone know of any descent bamboo fly rods for under 1000.00 thanks

Below are a few leads you may wish to follow. Some of the sites have a rod builder's list so you may want to check that out too. Also, many time a builder will advertise on the Classic Fly Rod Forum when they offer something at a discount. The Fly Fishing Show is coming up both in Somerset and Lancaster. Lots of opportunities to try some rods out. Good Luck!

There is used stuff all over the map price-wise but a lot of trial & error is required and condition can be an issue.

As far as new builders go, both of these guys (like MANY new builders) copy the tapers of the masters so you can buy a rod with a defined action that is new and have recourse if something goes wrong. Both will build you a custom rod under $1000.

Art Weiler is a great builder and a great guy. You can't go wrong with one of his rods. Used Orvis rods can also be had for a reasonable price on the used market.

You may want to add to your search list, www.redwingflyrods.com. Joseph Balestrieri. Old school builder from Wisconsin. Although low on radar, high on quality and taper choice. Probably not for long as waiting times are growing. Also www.stonerodco.com. Dennis Stone from Oregon. New rods, blanks, restorations, repairs. Hand planed also with proprietary tapers as well as classic.Leonard,****erson,Granger + more. His turn around times remain realistic.

What are you wanting for a rod? I fish very near you when I'm down. Gotta make the stop for Jam when I come through at Mcdaniels. I'm in the process of building, mentoring under a local maker along with a maker not far from you!

You can also buy a blank and finish it your self for a fraction of the cost.

you'll need to fit ferrules...or pay to have it done! You can fit fairly easily depending on what ferrules you end up with. After fitting ferrules the rest is pretty basic rod building..though different due to finishes and such, its not out of the question for an average tinkerer.

Did you check the kits out on anglers roost?

Excellent suggestions so far. I'll second Dennis Stone and add Bill Critchfield. I have experience with both of their work and recommend them.

Rolf's links to those tackle dealers is a good place to start.

It's always great to see others looking into bamboo fly rods; I use them for a high percentage of my trout fishing. Both my uncle and I build fly rods (and my uncle's taper won the Catskill Bamboo Rod Gathering contest a few years ago), though I recommend a western PA builder named Don Ward. Don owns Keystone Fly Rod Co., and has also developed an innovative magnet system for nets (and built his own drift boat). Basically, if wood or bamboo is involved, I recommend him.

Check out Don's site here: Keystone Fly Rod Company

I also believe that he will be @ the Cranberry Cabin Fever Show in February.

Wyatt makes a truly great rod, but they're not in the price range the OP was looking for.

I have two rods by Mike. Both are nice and Mike is a great guy. His Payne 100 taper is outstanding.

Hi guys, my name is Mike first time posting here but lurked around a little. I build rods as a side hobby and specializing in glass and cane. I am originally from Waterville in the pine creek valley and worked for slate run tackle in my younger years :-D
If ya have any questions shoot me an email, and I will tell ya about the tapers, of glass and cane.
Cheers
Mike

Don't know if you have found or gotten a Bamboo rod yet as I have been away from here, but here is a chance to test some and meet some builders as well. http://thefeatheredhook.com/upcoming-events.php. Jim Downes has his shop there and you can look at his rods and talk with him. He is a heck of a nice guy.
