I tied Jack Gartside's Sparrow Nymph at the Fly Tying Jam back in December. Here is a variant of that pattern that I tied specifically with carp in mind. After looking at the end results I don't think I would hesitate to fish this fly for smallies or for trout for that matter but it is something with a little differnent look to throw at those big old carp for a bit of a change up when needed. I am going to tie them in some different colors including a brighter green color to imitate a damselfly nymph. I included lead wire and the bead chain eyes to get it down into the silt real quick and ride hook up in front of those muddin' carp. Here is a pic and the recipe for the pattern as I tied it.

Gartside's Sparrow Nymph Carp Variant

Hook: Mustad 9672 Size 8
Thread: 6/0 Olive
Tail: Pheasant Marabou
Flash: Orange/Pearl Krystal flash
Body: Whitlock's Red Fox/Squirrel Abdomen SLF Dubbing
Hackle: Pheasant back feather tied soft hackle style
Collar: Pheasant aftershaft feather
Eyes: Medium Black Bead Chain eyes- tied Clouser style
Weight: approx. 12 wraps of .015 lead wire behind eyes

Nice looking tie John, looks like a winner.

Nice looking fly DC, I would try it a rust or orange color as well

Thanks guys.

Cody, Yeah, rust is a great color for carp. I may try one blending some rust dubbing with some orange shrimp colored ice dub for some flash. I usually tie most of my crayfish carp flies with a blend of rust and hares ear dubbing. Thanks for the suggestion.
