They've been singing away the last week or two. With all the "hoopla" of this year's 17-year brood, I've got an itch to tie up a few "dog day' cicadas to see what I can drum up. Has anyone ever fished an annual pattern for summer smallmouth? While I realize they don't come off in the numbers of the 17-year broods, there should be enough of them that the fish shouldn't be oblivious to them.

I found this article and pattern on them, but honestly think I could modify Loren Williams' pattern with the appropriate colors and a longer hook.

Annual cicada article/pattern

Anyone tinker with annual cicadas for smallies?

I caught a few browns, within a few casts, a month or so ago with a cicada fly. Later that same day I probably missed 5 or 6 more trout on it. I've heard them lately everywhere I've fished, but can't seem to get anything to take another one. I'll be where I was again tomorrow, so maybe I'll try again.
