I bought rubber soled wading boots about 2 seasons ago. I've been totally dissatisfied with their grip in the river and had added some small studs with minimal improvement. I saw Patagonia has a new boot out that has aluminum bar strips on the sole for grip and decided to rig my own up. I bought some 1/8"x1/2" aluminum, cut to the width of my sole (5 strips per boot), and screwed in with some sheet metal screws. I tried them out on the Lehigh yesterday, and let me tell you it was a huge improvement! It really felt like I was locked onto the rocks. That doesn't mean that I didn't I didn't fall, but you can't blame the boots for user error.
