A reliable knot for poor vision and unsteady hands: the Quick Penny Knot

This is a timely thread. I fished on monday, and it was the first really cold day for me this year. I'm old fashioned or stubborn and tie a improved clinch for all my tippet to fly knots. Usually, I have no issues. In the cold however, I was struggling with the knots way more than I have, almost ever. I had several where I missed the tag going through one or the other and then had to retie once or twice.

I had one fish that seemed like a very good one eat the egg that was on my dropper, and I saw the fish roll. I set the hook and it came off. When I looked at the dropper tag, I could see the telltale curly tippet of a knot that came undone.

I am starting to think that a new knot is in order.
Dear broodstock,

Or use better slobber on your knot! 😉

Tim Murphy 🙂

I'm a big fan of any knot I can tie with foreceps or mitten clamps. That fandom started winters ago (due to the cold hands as previously mentioned) but now I'm a mitten clamp junkie. This leader to tippet knot has totally replaced a triple surgeons for me. It's also much stronger in my experience, small sample size disclaimer etc:

I became a fan of the Davy knot several years ago and can tie it without tools and produces very little tag to clip off. It's basically a figure eight and requires no twisting. It has held onto fish big and small providing I pull test it every time (hooked to a zipper pull on my vest).

I like the Ovis Tippet knot as well. I tie it without using forecepts.

There is also a version of the Orvis knot for tippet to fly:

I found the Orvis knot to have poor strength when wet. Maybe I tied it wrong or something, but it didn't work for me. It was quite strong when dry, but it got much weaker when it was in the water. I now use the pitzen/quick penny knot instead.

I’ve never had the steadiest hands, and consequently I spend waaaaay too much time tying knots. Yesterday I stumbled across the Quick Penny Knot - which appears in exactly zero of the four knot apps I had on my phone 😑 - and was blown away.

For me the best thing about the Quick Penny Knot is that after you get the tippet through the eye, you never let go of it again. Check it out.

(Also, though it’s very strong, it’s definitely not 100% breaking strength, despite the claim in the video.)
I use the Davy knot, when I can get my eyes and fingers to work together. When they don't, I will use the Clinch knot or resort to a knot tool. This seems like a pretty easy knot to use. I will try it the next time I'm on the stream.

Thanks,
steve
