2025 Fly Fishing Ambitions

I’d like to have a good false albacore year. This year sucked.

I’d also like to get a double digit bonefish but we’ll see if I make the trip or not

Fishing more is always great, although I did get out 139 days in 2024. I encountered 2 musky last year while smallmouth fishing. Got some follows, but didn't get a take. I'm thinking a musky hookup would be great even if I don't land one.

Fish more...

Also christen some of rods I've bought in the two years that never got on the water for various reasons and fish some that haven't been used in a long time.

Never fished for albies, always wanted too. They get them in north jersey in the fall sometimes. I was talking to the captain on a striper trip up there in November. He was saying some years they show up and some not so much. He said last year was a great for bonita up there in the fall but not the albies. Where do you fish for them?

Caught a couple IFGA records last year but my tippet was too heavy (fly records only go up to 20 lbs.), and I didn't have a certified measuring device. All set for this year

Had a very tough 2024, so going on two adventures this year: tarpon, bonefish and permit fishing on the north shore of Cuba in March and hitting Lough Corrib in Ireland in May. I do hope to hit the famous mayfly hatch (there is only one "mayfly" in Irish terminology) and learn traditional lough fishing techniques.

Mostly, take full advantage of any fishing time I can get with an 18 month old at home and another on the way, but also:
  • Thoroughly enjoy my second (hopefully, annual) camping trip to Poe Paddy in April and catch my first fish in Penns Creek (it was completely blown out when we went last year).
  • Fish some new sections of my home waters
  • Explore some local streams that may hold brook trout, every one of which is a gem in Baltimore County
  • Explore some of the trout streams in southern York county

I want to find some good spots for smallies or panfish that are near my house so I can have more places to go when I can only get out for a short while.

Yeah the jersey ones are a little farther off shore but they’re there if you have a boat. Yeah last year bonito were in thick which is neat but they only fight so hard, they’re good for the table though so that’s nice. I fish albies out of Rhode Island, south county for the most part. Good years you’ll get double digit numbers and double digit # fish. It’s an addiction.

Catch a native brook trout over 10 inches, which I failed to do last year. Also catch a few wild brown trout over 20 inches, if not that big at least a couple in the 17-19 range. I had one hooked with just a few days to go in 2024 but I lost it.

Also I plan to finally make it up to central pa and fish Penns, spring creek, etc. Maybe even make it up to kettle creek where I hopefully could catch one of those big brookies.
Good luck, I have some similar sounding plans myself. Catch 10 inch native, explore central Pennsylvania and all it has to offer, break a new pb for small mouth and brown trout

Ladies and fellas, I said last year that this would be an annual post, so what are your fly fishing ambitions in 2025? My ambitions are rather simple, and they are this: to slow down and cast more dry flies on the water. I also want to explore a handful of new streams.

That's it. If I do both of those things, I'll be a happy camper.

How about all of yinz' folks?
I want to learn, and fish more, of WV. I've fished quite a bit since moving here, but my overall distance from great trout streams (on average, 2 hrs) has kept me from really diving in. Still, the highlights of my fishing year are the weeks I get back to PA and fish. This year, I want to really have some WVian highlights.

Nice variety of goals from all the responses.

I’ve got a streak going of 129 consecutive months on the water so want to continue that. This month’s looking tough. Hopefully the back half warms up.

Get back to documenting time on the water. Did that up until 2018 or so and got away from it. Think I’ll do it electronically this time around so it’ll be easier to add photos.

I’m 52 so the last few years I’ve been thinking about all the places I’ve wanted to explore while I still can so will pick at least 3-4 long hike/fishing trips in addition to checking out other new water.

Continue to add nymphs into my approach.

Planned a couple kayak camping/fishing trips to new areas.

Enjoy the time fishing with my son while he’s still in college.

I'm hoping those highlights will include the Elkhorn. I'll be looking forward to you stream report!

Oh also, we are trying to have some more Dauphin County League of Chubsmen meet-ups.

We are discussing some potential barflies and events to engage with other fly fishermen and women.

Those will be posted on the meet up threads.

It's always great to meet like-minded folk and get outside and enjoy the natural resources we are blessed with in the commonwealth.
