The annual striped bass Young of the Year (YOY) in the Chesapeake Bay was poor this year. Last year and 2011 had excellent YOY production, and this should ensure continued good population structure.

It was surmised that low river levels may have contributed to the poor numbers this year.

If you look at the year after 2011 it took a crash too, along with 96 and 01 just not as bad

There are two, nice size, young year classes in the population right now. Not every year can be or even needs to be a banner year class producer to have excellent fishing. The abundance was seen in the PFBC's high total catch value recorded this year in the May electrofishing stock assessment survey on the tidal Delaware.

So we've had two good year classes in the last 10. It also seems to me that each 10 year period avg is trending down. The fishery needs more protection.

The striped bass population received additional protection two seasons ago through more conservative regulations. Naturally, their impacts would need to be evaluated before any additional adjustments would be made. Separately, YOY values for the Chesapeake, Delaware, and Hudson are evaluated over a multi-year period. This multi-year approach prevents any potential overreaction to a single year's large year class or a single year's small year class.
