I believe I recall people here discussing fitting two rods into a tube designed to fit one four piece rod. I'm in a situation where I'll need to do this. This is the type of rod tube with a large center space and then three built-in sleeve pockets around the interior of the tube.

Anything I need to think about here beyond putting the butts at opposite ends in the center space? I'm guessing then just double up the other sections in the 3 outer sleeves?

I'm sure I'll figure it out tomorrow when I pack the rods, but I thought maybe checking first might save me from overlooking something and breaking a section.

Yeah, basically what you just laid out there. Just be careful when removing the smaller sections with the more delicate guides. Basically pull them both out every time and replace the one you’re not using. Don’t try to just pull one out.

Dear hooker-of-men,

Where are you going and how much protection is needed? You could probably cut up a couple of cardboard boxes and build a box to protect the rods while bouncing around in a vehicle with duct tape.

Alternately, you could buy a 4-foot section of schedule 40 4" PVC pipe, a butt cap and a threaded collar with a screw-in cap and some glue and build a rod case pretty easily if you hit a hardware store before you head out. That will be indestructible unless you run it over a couple of times.

Putting 2 tons of fertilizer in a one-ton truck generally causes problems. Snagging a guide while placing the rods inside or pulling them out may cause more trouble than it's worth.

Regards,

Tim Murphy 🙂

Thanks, Tim. I'm flying for a trip where I also need to fill a good deal of my checked bag with camping gear. My best option, given other things I need to take, will be to carry on a single rod tube as a personal item (but I don't want to be camping hours from a fly shop with only one rod).

I start the first leg of the trip tomorrow morning, so building or buying something new is not really in the running

Buy a blueprint container on Amazon and use that to carry the two rods. I’ve done that with multiple airlines.

Secure the rod pieces together with electrical tape or Velcro.

Dear hooker-of-men,

Have a great trip!

My daughter got me one of these for a gift, it works great. I think it fits 4 rods.

Sage Ballistic Rod Tube is what I use whenever I fly. Especially with buddies. We just stuff all the rods for the trip in one, and one buddy uses it for their carry on.

I prefer undivided tubes with two rods, each in it's own sock. One handle down and one handle up.
