I don't understand your comments. I don't keep many trout, but I think they taste fine and so do my buddies. My friend is a biologist for the PA Fish Commission. He says take the stocked fish home and eat them. That's why they're stocked. To each his own.

Many moons ago, I bought three wooden floats from the tackle shop at Octorora Reservoir for crappie fishing. They are a round wooden ball; orange, red & yellow in color with screw eyes to attach your line and a short round dowel inserted that makes the bobber function like a tip-up.

I swear you can cast these things into the next county...
 
There is a huge difference between National TU and what their staff in Pa do and contribute to wild trout and watershed conservation and then what local TU chapters do. Some TU chapters do a lot of conservation activities, others are more or less angler clubs that sponsor trout rodeos for kids.

It was directed towards the user who implied that stockies were only good for fertilizing a garden. I disagree, but to each their own.

They are edible, sure. I'd rather c&r them.

The part about people "expecting them" is poking fun at the whole stocked trout experience, true. People want the fish in predictable places and they stand around a hole all harassing the same fish. I find that humorous. This morning, on a tiny stream, I was laughing inside my head as I looked up and saw a line of people swarming a stream that is 8 feet wide. It's so unnatural that it cracks me up. Also, those experiences don't leave my soul feeling satisfied. That feeling of satisfaction is why I fish. There are evenings driving home from certain streams that mean the world to me where everything has gone perfectly and I didn't see a person, and that point in time, I feel 100% pure bliss, like nothing is wrong with the world, the universe, my life, etc. I'm totally elated.

I didn't feel that this morning. But I did try to help people find the love of fishing. I hope....

Just to be clear, I am the one who brought it up in this thread, but it was in jest to someone else saying it in a different thread.

I don't give a darn what people like to do as long as they are doing it responsibly and legally. Personally I prefer wild fish but don’t turn my nose up at stockers.

I do draw the line at stocked private club waters though. Won't do it.

Dear Bamboozle.

When my brother and I saw the rigs the guys were using at Halfway Dam to fish flies on spinning gear he rummaged in the tackle box and found the perfect Rube Goldberg solution.

We had a 2 oz Dipsey swivel sinker that had been used as a makeshift downrigger rig for getting shallow running stick baits into deeper water on Canada trips. He tied it to his line and tied a section of leader to the eye and added a fly from one of those $ .79 for a dozen circular box fly selections found everywhere in the early 1970's.

It might have been a Parmachene Belle or maybe a McGinty, but the fly selection was unimportant. He stood on the bank by the parking lot and reared back with all his might and launched his rig towards the lake with his Zebco 202 rigged rod. The sinker was still on its upward trajectory when the line broke with a sound like a crack of thunder. I swear it took a good 5 seconds or so for the free sailing sinker to return to the lake not far from the swimming beach. It went a good 150 to 200 yards and landed with the force equivalent to a dud artillery round during a WWII beach assault. It scared the bejeezes out of the people on the other side of the lake too! 😉

I remember how excited I was to go trout fishing my very first time on Opening Day at Ridley Creek...

Was it a zoo, yep! Did I catch any fish, nope! Did I care, nope, well maybe. 😉 Did I do it again for a few years after that, yep...

Eventually I lost interest, but that's how it how it goes for some folks with fishing.

However, frequently you can still find me sitting in a chair, drowning worms under a bobber, fishing for sunnies with the same passion and exuberance I had as kid so I guess not all fishing preferences or everybody changes...

For these reasons, I totally get Opening Day and I respect folks who fish the ways I don't...

I agree, except it was Mill Creek that initially lit my trout fishing fire. I have fond memories of those "good ole days."
