Long time reader of the forum. Decided to join up and maybe post some exploits and ramblings.

From SE PA but I spent a fair amount of time in the Northern tier and out of state. Fly fishing for 30 + years.

Not much else to say, other than Hello. 🙂

Welcome aboard, dig you profile pic.
Thanks!
It's actually a group I've been wanting to join for awhile but haven't. The guys that post on this site made me realize I feel the same way about our waterways and fish and I have no reason to delay anymore. Plan on joining this evening after work.

But let's not make this a debate. Fishing and conservation area two different subjects.

For the most part I joined this site to talk fishing.

Thanks!

Welcome! Thanks for rep'ing NFC!

Welcome aboard. GG

Thanks all for the welcome.
What kind of rigs you guys fish?

I personally fish a lot of small water so I dig fiberglass. I just finished up a short retro JKF tonight. Going to be a sweet little rod when some bigger fish are a possibility, yet delicate enough that little guys will be fun. I like the "fast glass" feel of these vintage blanks.

My work horse is a 1st Gen 6'6" 2wt 3pc Orvis Superfine Glass. I love the blank but I'm considering redoing the cork and reel seat. I was never a fan of what Orvis did to these rods in components, but the blank is a chef kiss. Flexible and slow but responsive and accurate.

I used to love the 7' 4wt Trout Bum and the early Orvis Graphite Superfine too. I just find fiberglass to be better for my needs anymore.

Anything that’s big enough to hold and keep a big old carp out of the crap.

Welcome to PAFF!!
Some places that is impossible. To be fair, I'm referring to some big carp I know that like the sewage outflow of a city 😬

They are some fun fish to reel in though, regardless of their origin.

Nice.
I do have a few larger fly rods for WW. I just don't use them much.

I like glass rods too. I have an Epic 4wt 7'6" Fast Glass I (three piece). Such a great and fun rod to use that has some incredibly good roll-casting abilities and has the ability to make delicate casts. I primarily indicator fish with mine. It does suck going from a graphite rod where I can simply flick the rod to set the hook, and now, having gone back to glass, I have to really set into the fish. I like how you can "dig" into glass rods and how when-overlined they really become lively.

I'd like to get an Epic 3wt 7ft rod at some point. This would be a Fast Glass II model. Casted one at the jam and fell in love with it.

I also have a new Superfine 2wt 6'6" rod that was picked up at the end of last year. I've mostly lawn casted mine. Really seems to like Scientific Anglers Infinity 3WF-F. I fished it once and it was an ok experience. I wished that rod fished better in close. The fish didn't feel like whales on it. Overall it feels like a short H3 with a bit more flex.

Recently scooped up a sub-$100 rod from a forum member. It's a 3wt 7ft rod that is quite pleasant to cast with a little bit of over-lining. I am anxious to get this rod out to a creek next year when it becomes viable to fish there for trout again.

Overall I love fishing glass but due to a lot of fishing I do graphite is just more suitable.

I'm curious is that the cork reel seat model or the new one?
The 1st Generation was a bit more flexible I hear, and the the new 2nd Gen models had "taper improvements".
Thankfully the 6'6" stayed a 3 PC while the rest went 4.

I never understood why staggered ferrule in 2 PC and 3 PC rods went the way of the dodo bird. It puts all the pressure right on the ferrule when flexed.

I agree and typical of Orvis, they under line rate their rods. It's a 3wt. I like Cortland Spring Creek or Sylk on mine in DT3 if I can find it. Otherwise WF3 even WF4.

My Superfine is current model (2nd gen I guess). It's definitely a bit more stout for a glass rod, definitely more stout than the Epic, and the Epic is fast by glass standards. My only complaints with this rods are that they should have put nickel hardware for the reel seat as the black aluminum looks a bit too modern and is the same reel seat used on the H3 (I think). The wood spacer feels a bit cheap. I think the blank looks good and it's olive green portion towards the hilt is lovely, a more subdued version of the H3's obnoxious graphics.

I know a lot of people like the old SFG rods.

When it comes to glass, I like the faster glass rods. Perhaps that is because I started on graphite. I don't like the slow and heavy "noodle" feeling glass rods. Just my preference. The recovery on one of those kind of rods would be so slow I'd be checking my watch after I made my backcast.

I agree on both the 1st and 2nd Gen models the reel seat is less than desirable.

I like slow glass too, they are fun, especially like the ones coming out in the Japanese market that people refer to as "sticky". They have their own following and people who prefer them.

I've come to prefer "fast glass", which still isn't all that fast, has accuracy and recovery, but it also is lighter with a thinner diameter.

Choices are a great thing!

I do think I'm redoing this cork and reel seat though.

Redoing the cork and reel seat because you don't like it or redoing it because the cork is going bad? The 668 sounds like a lot of fun. I'd make that into a summertime popper rod for ponds.

You should try an Epic at some point man, they seem to be "the name" in glass and I think they are better than what Orvis puts out but I have yet to play around with an old SFG. I had a Superfine Carbon 3wt 6'6" that felt like a broomstick so I traded it. Cork wasn't so nice but the rod looked cool with its un-sanded gray blank.
