Seeing active stoneflies and shucks is a good sign to start fishing with a stonefly nymph or a stimulator dry fly.

When fishing with stonefly nymphs, is it advisable to use a stimulator dry pattern as an indicator, and if so, which patterns do you guys recommend?

You can certainly do so....but I generally don't (and I like using dry flies as indicators).

The reason being that when I'm fishing stoneflies it is often in the colder months of the year or in fairly high, faster water in springtime when flows are pretty high. In these conditions, I usually want my stonefly nymph to get down and stay near the bottom and this requires a lot of split shot and long leaders. Such weight and longer leaders doesn't work as well with a dry fly as an indicator.
