When did PA turn into Wyoming?

Dear Board,

You know me, I like to complain!

But seriously, in the last couple of years howling winds have become commonplace in PA. I don't mean the occasional gust that blows a cast off it's intended course. I'm talking about consistent 20+ mph winds that make fishing suck.

Am I alone in seeing this?

Regards,

Tim Murphy 🙂

It was brutal out there today. My streamers were coming back like boomerangs

Tim,

I live at a pretty good elevation on the shoulder of a mountain and it's normally breezy up here but you are absolutely right! I just said this to the wife yesterday about how sick and tired I am of the wind every stinking day!
I had to spend yesterday morning cleaning up this mess......
I noticed this past summer that my only poplar tree was dead. Figured I had some time to drop it where I wanted.
30mph out of the South and then 30-40mph gusts from the north had other plans!
Just grateful it went on a north because there's a swimming pool and deck right in the line of fire off to the right!

Dead trees kind of have a way of going where they want to, even if you have other plans. 😉

Tim - My wife and I aren’t spending as much time in Montana these days, just south of Livingston. Would you like our wind sock?

It wasn't too bad in Central PA today. I fished for a bit and landed three wild browns. I will take it.

Here is my beef, though. On the one stream I was on, as I was leaving I drove by two fly anglers either getting in or out of their car. They had nets that could have reached the entire way across the stream. Why does everyone need a net with a 3 foot handle on it these days?

When the wind is coming from the right direction, they can use it as a sail-assist as they walk back uphill to their car.

If bushwhacking with a mono rig and a strung 10-foot rod isn't challenging enough, I think they like to have that long-*** net hanging in every low-hanging branch they duck under? Just makes the grind that more macho.

Dear Mike,

That is literally good kite flying weather in Wyoming from my time spent there. My brother has lived in the intermountain West for close to 40 years. When he comments on how bad the wind is in PA when he comes out to fish, I know he means it. 😉

I'm tired of getting out of my truck and having to make sure the door doesn't crash into the car next to me or blow right off its hinges. Or worse yet, mashing my ankle before I can pull my left foot back in the truck! 😉

Tim Murphy 🙂

Apparently, it's the latest craze. I can maybe see a longer handled net on big water being useful, but not otherwise.

I've always been a person who isn't influenced by trends, celebrities, videos, etc, etc.

I just find stuff that works for me. I never cared what was "in" or "out."
Dear jifigz,

I realize I'm derailing my own thread. That's real progress for this old fart. 😉

I dispensed with a net 30 years ago. I do carry one in the boat in case I get a dandy, but it's probably dry rotted by now, given that I never catch dandies anymore! 😉

Besides, since I don't usually keep fish, I don't care if I lose one. If I have the leader in hand and the fish goes poof, I count it!

Tim Murphy 🙂

It has seemed worse the last few years. Me and my wife say that all the time. Wonder if it’s a fact or just perception? Can make for a rough day fly fishing for sure.

I kayak a lot on the Yough which flows north and the Allegheny which generally flows south. Somehow the last couple years the wind is always blowing upstream regardless of the river I’m on. It’s a meteorological oddity.

Looks like you have some nice deer woods surrounding you. You're blessed.

I carry a small net, but see the same thing. I beleive the advent of the euro rods in the 10-11 ft range are encouraging longer handles to more easily reach the fish.
