I usually tie flies in the 12-18 size range. I tie a mix of dries and nymphs. What is your preference for waxed vs. unwaxed threads and why?

You can buy unwaxed thread? You noticed a difference anyways?

I use whatever thread I've got. I pay attention to denier or size. 8/0 is dandy. When I can't get things to stay on the thread, I either wipe my finger over a bit of wax, or I rub the wax over the thread.

I don't bother to worry abotu the proper thread. I make the thread in front of me the proper thread by using it.

My preference is waxed thread. The wax allows the thread to bind materials better, and it really helps with keeping the thread from fraying. This is important to me as i have generally rough hands and I hand whip.

Also by using waxed thread i dont need to use head cement with a good tight whip. The wax allows you to really torque the knot tight. This is a huge plus when your tying small dries.

I tie a lot of small dries with thread bodies as well as midge pupa and larvae. The waxed on the thread protects the thread from the fishes teeth.

I also prefer waxed thread as they dont fade.
