Wading Jacket recommendations

Well, the time has come for my old cabela's ultralight. I have had it for a number of years, but it's getting torn and moldy.

I didn't own a wading jacket before that, because I didn't really fish bad weather much before the last few years. I'm out of the loop on the wading jacket scene.

My price range is ideally < $125 or so, and I would prefer to use the jacket as an all season one. My old ultralight shell was even usable during rain showers during the warmest days, so I really did have it with me almost all the time. Would gore-tex leave me dry from the rain but soaked in sweat? Is it worth the extra money?

The UL also made a great shell, but I did have to wear plenty of layers under it. Gore-tex would be nice in the winter.

Any and all recommendations are welcomed, but the price constraints aren't really negotiable beyond $150 or so right now.

Cabela's gore tex jacket is on sale for 100 or so, but my size sold out.

JayL, I own this jacket and it is great. Give it a look.

Jackets- theres a million of them out there. I have a decent one so I have not looked into them for several years.

My only real suggestion (which would apply to a vest) is get a shorty so when you wade a little on the deep side it does'nt get all wet in the water.

I agree with the advise above, get a shorty for wading..I prefer a poncho for every thing else..In fact I'm in the market for a decent poncho right now..Most of the poncho's I've owned, or have seen, tend to be on the cheaper side..I don't even know if there is such a thing as a step up poncho?

That Ed's jacket looked nice for the money. I bought a Patigonia about 5 years ago..I'd say it showed a considerable amount of honest use in that time..Finally it began to break down, and I started getting wet..Tried the sprays but they didn't last long..Decided to send it back to patigonia; thinking they could reapply the dryant. Couple weeks later I got the call:patigonia replaced the old jacket, with a new current model, for free...

I like buying things once. When ever I am in the market for fly fishing apparel I always check with Patigonia first...They guarantee every thing they make for life...

Dear jay,

I picked up a Cabela's UL jacket for $ 42.50 at Hamburg on Sunday on the way home from the Fly Show.

I was surprised to find one in Triple Extra Fat that fit me, but I did notice a few others on the clearance rack in various other sizes. They also had some Gore-Tex jackets in the bargain cave but I didn't look real hard because I didn't want some other big galoot to snap up the cheap one on clearance while I was farting around. ;-)

You may want to take a run up there?

Regards,
Tim Murphy :)

Dear jay,

OOPS, don't know why this showed up twice?

LL beans new emerger II jacket is pretty sweet for under $80. my buddy has the orginal and they are not a breathable as high end jackets but it never got him wet after probably 5 years now. I plan to get one and I haven't used anything but Patagonia SSTs since 1999. They didn't have them yet in center valley but marlton is not to far from you - also they have free shipping right now.

Jay,

I've seen this Columbia Jacket at Gander Mountain. Looks like a nice jacket for the price ($100).

Gore-tex is a breathable liner, so don't worry about sweating. Found this Patagonia on sale. It's a packable, waterproof breathable shell for 149

click on wading gear...

I have this one (got it on sale for like 80.00 I think).

i like the coat a lot, but no zingers and the pocket are not big enough for a large fly box.

It's also heaver weight then a standard goretex rain coat, which is good for winter....

Albatross,

Nice jacket my friend has that same jacket from Columbia. It's a very nice jacket for the price. I have the Redington Stratus and you can pick it up most places between $100 to $125.00. It is a very nice jacket that is short for wading, waterproof, breathable and cuts the wind.

Jay,

I've been using my LL Bean PacLite breathable Gortex jacket for a long time. I bought a second one when I was in Maine, but still haven't worn out the first one I bought. It's one of the best FFing purchases I've ever made. It's light enough to carry in my backpack at all times, keeps you dry in warm weather, and is a great shell jacket with layers underneath for cold weather. I give both the jacket and LLBean's service an A+ rating. It's in you price range at $150. Good luck.

If you are not in a hurry to buy one, download the desktop alert from Steepandcheap.com and look for the Cloudveil Crystal Creek jacket. It comes up about once every ten days or so. They usually go for about $130, and from what my friends have told me are solid jackets.

There are some decent ones here. I am in the market as well.

I received this jacket from Eddie Bauer for Christmas. I have been out in the weather at least a dozen times since then. It is an old school waxed cotton, which makes it waterproof. The other upside is that the hood and sleeves zip of for fair weather. I love it, but it may be a little out of the price range.
