Thanks for the info gfen. Do you own any of these?

I have the Peak rotary and I'm happy with it. They also have a non-rotary version for less $. I started with a AA vise but I wore the jaws out after awhile. I think the Peak is really good for the price.

I started with a $25 Cabela's "Master Vise." Six months later I had an $80 Griffin Odyessy Spider. 18 months later I had a $210 Regal.

Not exactly quality financial planning.

That attachment is a bobbin rest, and its used if you have a "true rotory" vise. Some guys insist on that, some guys don't care.

You'll find alot of contrary opinions on this.

Renzetti Traveler gogogogo no seriously, do it!

Go big or go home.

J Vise or Law Vise.

even though I have my eyes on a renzetti presentation 2000 I am using an anvil atlas that I have been tying on for about 2 yrs now. I like this vise very much and dont know why I want another its just one of those things that gets in your blood and you cant **** it out. The anvil is a great strong built rotary vise for around 150 or less and comes with a c clamp and a pedestal base. Worth looking into if your in that price range the renzetti is a little higher priced.

look at a peak... they have some good packages with quaility tools

with that said... i also think you need to see a vise in person to decide if you really like the fit and finish... also the height from the base and how that fits your tying surface

i've tied on thompsons, danvise, anvil, nor-vise, dyna-king, and regal... dyna-king and regal are the 2 i have now
DK is my favorite for tradtional hooks (22-6/0)... reagal for waddington shanks and tubes... but that may change when my j-vise comes next week

A vise in that ohio vise showdown, I got the e-z rotary vise. Amazing vise for the $. If you plan on tying quite a few bass/saltwater flies you might want to go with something different. But for trout flies it's an amazing vise.

Definitely need to see it in person. I was set on a peak from my research...but after seeing them in person, i came home with a renzetti traveler. Never looked back.

If I was to get one it would be Dyna-King Barracuda.

I myself have a peak and do like it.

IMHO Renzetti traveller..Renzetti set the bar also has the most add ons too, will tie from 4/0..to 28's.about all you need unless you are tying larger billfish flies or full dress Atlantic Salmon Flies.

If you Prefer stationary..Hands down..HMH Spartan will accept the same jaws as their standard vice for quite a few beans less.

If you are going to do anything always buy the best you can afford and accept nothing less.Great tools make things more enjoyable and easier too.

+1

I got the vise with a pedestal base on ebay for $50. Takes a bit to get used to but works fantastic.

I think a lot of people would say that it depends on what you are tying is what is going to be the big decision on what vise to get. But when it comes down to it, it holds a hook........period. I bought one from my local fly shop for I think around 50 bucks if that and I have used it from 3/0 hooks down to a size 22 hook. It is rotary but still it is a preference but I would be out of my mind to get a vise that is around even 100 bucks or more. Just doesn't make sense in my mind

Ask ten people and you'll get 10 different answers; That being said spend the money the first time and buy a good rotary vise. I went through 2 cheap vises that lasted a short time and didn't perform well. I settled on a Renzetti Presentation 3000 and I'll never tie on something else again! The "Traveler" is a good cheaper option, but they all travel about the same, so don't be swayed by the name.

Good Luck
