Hi Guys,

do any of you that fish teams of 2 or 3 wet flies on the swing tye your own casts ?

i was tying up some casts last night, using the recommended 1X flouro which seems a little overkill, but it is stiff as you need.

the mainline was Fulling Mill 1X (10lb) and the droppers Rio 1X (8lb), tyed using water knots. i will attach the cast to the leader via a tippet ring.

i wondered what people prefer - do you go that heavy or use 2X, 3X ?

Also, how do you store the casts to keep them kink free ?

Thanks

Mark.

yes.

maxima chameleon for the butt and then maxima clear in 10#, 8# and 6#.

knot on pieces of the 10# or 8# above the blood knots for droppers.

cut flies, leave droppers if they're long enough still. coil gently. stick back page of fly wallet.

use 10lb for a leader. then use a drop loop knot for in-line and the perfection loop for the end loop. tie a 12 in length of 3x to each loop and tie fly to the 3x. when 3x is too short replace it with more. loops stay in place and leader can last for a whole season or 2.

you can buy these here and use it as a model to tie your own.

Thanks - i forgot to ask - what weight & length rod are you using for that set up ?

Cheers

No classic casts here, but I swing wets all the time.

Furled or twisted leader
2 to 2.5 feet 3x tippet material
2 feet of 4x.
First fly goes on the tag dropper, second fly at the end of the leader.
If I use the occasional third fly I just tie another length of 4 or 5x onto the bend of the point fly.

i tye my casts the same whether i am swinging the wets or not.i often dead drift wets, whether they are upstream or not.

often,i will use a pre-made leader by christopher fave.

i urge you to not limit your wet fly fishing to swinging.

I use a single wet fly, it's easier to cast and there are fewer tangles. But if I tie on a second fly I tie it on the hook bend, not traditional, but it works for me.

Tying off the bend is terrible advise. Don't listen to that.

One fly, one the other hand, is perfectly serviceable although contrary to the question asked.

Thanks guys,

i fished the Tully last weekend with three flies - very relaxing but not fish and quite a few leaves.

i used 1X, i think i'll step down to 2X as maybe with the low clear water they could see the cast.

or maybe it was the leaves putting the fish down.

Continue to tie your dropper loops with the thicker stuff. You want it to stand off the main leader.
