I love to fish with Comparaduns, though know the wing can be tedious for some. In this video, I try to simplify the process and share a tying procedure that produces a great "fan" of deer hair, creating the intended profile. Enjoy!

Very enjoyable instructional video. tying several using your technique. Looking forward to using them in GSMNP.

Good video. When i need more i Will give the three stage tying in of the dear hair a try. It seems effective. One very small constructive critique of the video - for a 17 minute video on a comparadun the body should have been included.

Thanks for the kind words, and good luck with this technique. Many tyers will simply build a dam in front of the wing, which works fine, but typically allows the hair to cheat forward as the pattern gets fished.

The technique shown in this video forces the hair to remain closer to the 90 angle, hence why I recommend it over others.

whether you wrap the wing with thread in clusters or wrap directly in front of the hairs to stand them up, you are essentially building a dam of thread

i also like the finer "comparadun" deer hair

As usual, Job Well Done. I've been tying for quite a while but still like to watch your videos.

Thanks, Trout, that's kind of you to say...

Got a question for you all, when talking about selecting deer hair with the fine black tips, does the length of those tips play a part in making your choice?

post #1 provides a pretty good answer

I posted a link to this Chris Matthews video a couple of years ago in response to a similar thread. That old link no longer works, but the videos associated with that shop have simply moved to a new account on Youtube.

Matthews Ties Sparkle Dun

As to sectioning wraps through the wing to help keep it upright, the first person I saw do that was was Chris Helm in one of his videos.
