Tips on Whip Finishing

I’ve been tying flies for over thirty years. Used half hitches for the longest time till I learned how to whip finish by hand. Finally bought a whip finish tool a few years ago. Watched some videos and finally figured it out. I use the tool occasionally, but prefer to do it by hand, it’s just quicker for me. I tie my mayfly patterns as parachutes so I still use half hitches to get under the hackle. Definitely use head cement if just using half hitches. I like to use hackle that is one to two sizes bigger to give me better flotation. Practice, practice, practice.
