Just got finished reading The Big Burn: Teddy Roosevelt and the Fire that Saved America, by Deckle Edge. Not a fly fishing book, but the story of how the National Fire Service got started and the how the first ideas of conservation took a national stage.
As much as it is about Roosevelt, it is about Gifford Pinchot the former Governor of Pennsylvania. The Pinchot family grew rich off clear cutting much of Northeastern Pennsylvania in the late 1800's and Gifford devoted his life to the new progressive movement at the time about conservation.
The story entails the horrific fire that consumed the Northwest around Idaho in August of 1910 and how the National Fire Service was a a political pawn of the issues during the time.
