Forgive me if this subject has been flogged and I missed it. What's "tactical" mean as applied to what we do? I have tactics I've used for 40 years to catch fish but now it's applied to hooks and rods etc. I'm trying to stay hep.....er...hip.

Sounds like a marketing ploy.

Probably by a millennial who thinks its new and improved.

Ha!

Agreed on the marketing part.

If I had to come up with what that marketing term infers to me, I would guess that it means "specialist". i.e. you have general purpose stuff and then you have stuff that's meant for a very narrow purpose.

What makes a hook, tactical? I see orvis and others sell tactical hooks, but they just look like barbless hooks? Anyone use these?

It seems to me, through blogs etc, that tactical is most often connect to nymphing for whatever reason.

Tactical = we can charge more for them...

Or

We don't know what the heck it really means but neither do you and it sounds like it might be something you really need and therefore you'll buy it (which comes back to the first definition)

From a strict definition of the term, I guess we are waging war on fish?

Tactile means that you will out fish all fisherman on the river, (even Kevin Van Dam if he's there), unless of course they also have tactical hooks. And of course it would be considered rude to ask them.

In this context, it is for the fish noodlers.

I've thought about noodling, but I don't really wanna stick my noodle in places like that....

Perhaps some company makes tactical gear for tactile fisherpeople?

When it comes to vests & bags, if it has a lot of pockets and places to clip crap to, it's tactical.

If it's a reel and the instructions are more than a 1/4 page, its tactical.

If it's waders and they have a pocket or some jiffy suspender system, it's tactical.

If it's a nipper and it doesn't say Old Pal on it, or a zinger that costs over $5, it's tactical.

Fly lines other than 444 DT's & WF's are tactical.

And of course anything camo is automatically tactical as is any gear that they tell you is tactical.

Just so not to be confused, all of this tactical gear is used for "technical" fishing and if you buy into it, you are testicles...

...more commonly known as NUTS!

Pcray your suppose to use your hand!

Maybe it's something that is "trending"

Gotta try to attract the video gamers. Everything they see is tactical.

Isn't Tactical just another word for "competition" style gear, like hooks, rods, etc?

New fad buzzword.

Wouldn't surprise me if, to some degree, FF gear marketers are watching the enormous success of AR style firearms and the entire "tactical" business boom surrounding bolt on rail goodies that accessorize with this fad: sights, flashlights, etc. All of this, in turn, is driven by movies and popular culture that promote special operations forces and similar such "tactical" topics. If you wanna be like the cool "tactical guys," yuh gotta have the tactical stuff.

Marketing.

Heaven help us if they find a way to mount a rail on fly rods.

Good Gawd Dave! That's genius! Sage ZLX with a picatinny rail! Think of the options! Red dot scope, star light optics, bayonet ( for those Gemmie excursions), man this is gonna be huge!
