I just got on this site today by a recommendation of a friend of mine. I am hoping to find a substitute dye for summer duck. I cannot find the veniard dye anywhere here without ordering it off the net. I do have many colors of rit liquid dye in my shop and I was wondering if by mixing a few I could come up with a reasonable sub. I dont have any idea what color or shade it is.
Thanks in advance for any responses. fred

This should help:

This is A.K. Best's recipe:

10 cups water in a coffee carafe
1 cup of wet mallard flank
1 tablespoon Rit tan #16
2 tablespoons white vinegar

This recipe makes a good wood-duck color, you just have to experiment with how long to leave the feathers in the dye bath.

I get my feathers from local hunters in trade for flies.

heritage thank you for the information. I will try it and see what happens. I am using his book to do some bleaching and dyeing but didnt see that particular formula. I will let you know how it works. Fred

I do have plenty of feathers and I get a lot of them without having to tie flies for the people who bring them to me. I guess I am a little luckier than you in that respect. They just drop them off here along with other critters for me. I was mainly looking for the actual color of summer duck dye I cant get a sample of it on any website and I cant find it here locally. I dont want to order one box off the net if I can make it with the rit dyes I have available. thanks for the response though.

I don't pay them with flies, I tie them as a favor. Like thanks for the pheasant tails, here are some pheasant tail nymphs. Thanks for the wood duck, I hope you like march browns, or thanks for the jungle ****, I hope you like march browns. 🙂

Fred, we have a part time employee that specializes in custom dying. I will ask him about summer duck and leave you a msg.
