Like DFG, I too enjoy taking my fly tying gear on extended trips. I take it to Erie for a few days, To the Jam for the trip, and sometimes I forget to take it out of the car and it is with me when I fish afterward. Only one time did I actually tie "Streamside" Actually it was in the back of a pick up with a cap. We were in Erie, The water was up and colored, Nobody was hooking up but this one guy, It was very frustrating. Finally one of his fish came down through the riffle and I offered to net it. While doing so, I inspected the fly and after carrying the fish to him, I shot back to the truck and tied up a had dozen. I gave one out to each of of our group, lef tme with three. We all hooked up and lost all the flies in under two hours. Then we drove back to the Burg with smiles on our faces.
Otherwise it has been an overnight affair, seeing what we got skunked on and tying them for the next day.
Once I had it on a day trip to the Little J and it rained like the Noahs ArK story when I got there....I tied some back up Slate Drakes until it slowed down enough to fish....I didn't get into the flies I tied that day but the thought was there. I got chased off the water when the rain wouldn't let up. 2.5 hours to the river, 4 hours there, (2 hours sitting huddles under my raincoat waiting for the rain to stop) 25 miutes fishing, 4 fish, Then it got muddy. 2.5 hours home. I still enjoyed myself.
