Spinning Deer Hair For Dave's Hoppers

I am trying to tie some Dave's Hoppers and I can't seem to get the deer hair to tie properly and form a nice compact head. How do you tie the deer hair in so that it stands up and packs into a nice head?

You gotta work with thread tension. Really clamp it down, and pack it down with your thumbnail before adding more clumps. Pack it rock hard then use a razor to trim it.

The orvis fly tying manual has a good tutorial. I highly recommend it.
