I had a chance to cast the 9’ 4 wt and it peaked my interest as I’m a fan of moderate to moderate/fast action rods - a shrinking market it seems. Had a nice moderate action, yet still had a nice (relatively) quick recovery. Strangely, very few shops in PA seem to carry them or have them in stock. Lots of Centrics around, not many G Series models. I don’t remember seeing them at the Lancaster shows.

Any experiences fishing the 4 or 5 weight versions of these rods? The 8’8” 4 wt seems to be the legendary configuration but the 5 wts are also getting good reviews online. I’d be interested in overall experiences and in their usefulness for tactics outside of purely dry fly: wet/soft hackle, dry dropper, light nymphing, size 8-10 bugger. I value versatility (within reason).

I have the GS 904. I use the rod to fish dries and smaller nymphs / soft hackles. While I like the rod I find the rod to have a heavy tip when compared to a Taylor rod in the same comfiguration. The Taylor Truth Z is big water 4wt that is more a dry fly specialist and is lighter with a faster recovering tip. The Scott is the better choice as a more all around rod and a good choice for soft hackles both upstream and down and across. Similar rods would be the Sage LL or the less expensive Douglas Upstream. Unless you are set on a 9ft the 8'8" GS would have less perceived swing weight.
