I have used the Professor Bodkin fly rod carrier on my vehicle that has a steel hood and steel roof the magnetic holders have not let me down and I recommend them.
I now have vehicle with a plastic hood and steel roof (Ford F-150)
I purchased the PBodkin carrier that comes with a suction cup for the plastic hood of my truck. Although I have not used on the road , I just tested for hold and it does not seem to be as strong as the magnet anyone else ever use the suction cup for the hood on their vehicles?

I have the sumo rod racks with suction cups.

Take a wet cloth an wipe wear you are going to place the racks then while the area is still wet put the suction cups in place(Also make sure the bottom of the suction cups are clean) an that should create a good seal.I have found it is easy to store the cloth in a zip lock or something that seals so the cloth doesn't dry out that way i have a wet cloth everytime o remove an replace the racks throughout the day im fishing.
