I bet most of you have been doing this for years but I've only been using it for a few years and works well for me.
I use polypro instead of feathers for wing cases and after pulling the wing case over the thorax, tie it off at the head and use what sticks out the front for legs - just like a pheasant tail.
The feather wing cases just didn't have the durability with shredding after a few fish.
the downside to polypro is it doesn't have the markings of feathers but a couple dots with a sharpie gets it close enough for me - haven't noticed any more or fewer fish caught so appears to be no difference in that regard.
The photo below is crude - i just quickly threw a fly together for this - but hopefully gets the idea across.
I guess you could also just use a dubbing picker to pull out legs but this doesn't take very long to do and the material is already there from the wing case.

Can do the same thing with Antron yarn for a touch of sparkle.

good idea. I do that for a few flies; one is the Slate Drake nymph.

I mostly use polypro for floating applications since it's hollow and good for floating wing material.
With a weighted nymph I'm sure it will work.

Thanks for pointing this out - maybe this would be good for an emerger then!
