I am getting ready to tie some winter flies for fishing the clarion in ridgway and the tailrace at east branch dam. I was thinking pheasant tails, hares ear nymphs, squirrel nymphs and some small black stonefly nymphs. any suggestions on patterns or sizes?

i actually catch most of my winter trout on squirrel nymphs, and harse ear nymphs. the rest are caught on streamers. the key to catching winter trout however, is presentation. whatever you decide to use, get it down deep.

Anything sparse and small. dont overlook a San Juan or tiny eggs as well.

Standard Pheasant tails and hares ears will always work.

I have been having a lot of luck with caddis larva paterns as well. The "twisted caddis" i tie is deadly and is very similar to a rock worm patern.

I have caught a few dead drifting streamers with a few twitches.

I must add that i fish mostly beadheads this time of year. Watch the water closley. Midges can make or break a winter day as well.
