Obviously trout pellets are made from ocean fish that are an important forage for ocean fish like stripers. We know bunker/menhaden are a critical fatty calorie rich food source for stripers which are struggling mightily right now and competing for food with invasive blue catfish in the bay.
PFBC indicates they use these important baitfish species to feed their roughly 5-6 million adult, keystone, fingerling, lake Erie, and co-op trout.
“The food trout are fed in the hatchery is made mostly of fish meal. Ocean fish like herring and menhaden are processed and nutritional supplements (vita- mins) are added.”
Wondering what scale of impact PFBC has individually on this resource. Also wondering what incentive or stability PFBC gives trawler companies like Omega Protein who remove these fish from the ocean for non human consumption?
Obviously its not a line item
We know the harmful effects the hatcheries have on the streams they operate on or pollute with invasive species via escapees, potential acquisition and transport of invasive species/pathogens(gill lice mud snails), and excess nutrients, waste of conservation funds/grants and the spreading of harmful invasive species.
But what impact does the feed that comes at the expense of struggling coastal food webs have?
