Afternoon All,

I have been tying off and on for 10 or 15 years or so, and I would probably considered to be intermediate. I have always purchased fly-tying materials that I needed at a local shop, but would like to find a good online source. Anyone have any opinions on a source with a wide inventory, and reasonable prices?

Also, any opinions on best hooks (Tiemco, Mustad, etc.). I have never done anything scientific, but used Dai-Riki recently and felt they were good.

Thanks!

In my youth I used to buy from mail order houses (cheaper and the 'net was still years away) but I then started to go to fly shops. I would buy necks from these mail order places and often the quality was less than I anticipated. I started to go to shops, got my necks in the quality I was looking for, got advice, and bought all my stuff at that point. I spent most of my money at Kettle Creek Tackle Shop because that was the stream where I did my annual spring trip. Phil would give my instruction, pointers and advice, the right colors for what was hatching, etc. I still buy there but also stop more frequently at other shops in the area I fish now as well. I just felt that I wanted to pick my material, not someone who was moving inventory to a faceless customer. I have bought some stuff on ebay and have had good and not so good experiences.

Like the others, there are some materials that I like to see in person before purchasing. Also the two shops that are local to me don't always have what I'm looking for, but I try to go there first when at all possible.

As far as online retailers, I've been very happy with the selection and service from JSFlyfishing.

As far as hooks go, I prefer Daiichi or Tiemco for most of my ties. Dai-Riki makes a good hook as well. Mustad hooks are usually the most bang for the buck. I use Mustad standard nymph hook 3906, and 3906B for many of my numph patterns. Any of the brands that you've mentioned should do just fine.

Really helpful Jaybo and bam, thanks for the input. All of those look like great sources of fly-tying materials. I also enjoy supporting my local shop, but sometimes feel they lack the depth or breadth of materials I need. Regardless, thanks again!

One thing I like about JSFlyfishing aside from the selection is that you earn points for every purchase and can use them for a discount for a future purchase. It's not huge, but hey anything is better than nothing. Good selection and EXCELLENT customer service. I actually found them by means of advertisement on this website so that's pretty cool too.

I've heard great things about Feather-Craft and had to bookmark MRFC.com. Thanks Bam!

I agree JSFlyfishing has a great selection I also have been happy with HookandHackle.com along with FlyShack.com I have been using Saber Fly hooks for the last 2 years and they have been holding up great. I do us the local fly shops for a lot of material as well I however you are able to find some good deals on the internet on material I can buy in large amounts.

Hook & Hackle.com has some good deals..feathers from Whiting farms at a discount under there H&H name brand

Flyshack.com also

Ebay..i have got good deals on many items free shipping also

I love BAc's shop in Erie..awsome stuff great prices better then most!

As far as hooks..Tiemco are the best in many hook styles..love the finish on them also. Dai riki are good But often the finish on many brands has a bright shine NO GOOD watch for this

I have tried some cheaper hooks from Ebay and the net and found they are exaclty that cheap..even though they claim to be great..

You often get what you pay for in a hook!

Hook & hackle sells name brand hooks that work well for me.

I get different hooks for different fishing..if im going for steelhead/salmon/saltwater i dont use a cheap hook..but if im fishing 10-20 inch trout i have doen well with the discount hooks.

Hooks can make it or break it on a big fish...dont go cheap!
