Need help with tying material substitution. Looking for something other than the black PT that is used for the tail. Any recommendations?

Great suggestion, Mike. The dark band on a wild turkey fan located just below the buff or chestnut colored tips on the turkey tail feathers are virtually black. Sometimes they have some flecks of bronze on them as well. On some birds the dark band is much wider than others. Obviously the wider the band the longer the dark fibers are going to be. Some of the widest dark bands on the turkeys I have killed over the years have been on the more mature gobblers. So just go out next Saturday and shoot yourself a big old longbeard and you'll be in business. These fibers also make awesome black herl bodies. Just tie them in and wrap them like you would PT fibers for the body of a PT nymph. Wild turkey tail feathers are a great tying material with some beautiful colors and markings on them.

Any of the above.

what about moose main or turkey beard

rabbit guard hairs...if you want a little bulk leave some underfur in....cut from a zonker strip. Pull the underfur out for a thin profile. you can use just about any fur like this (mink beaver etc) but obviously rabbit is easy to get in multiple colors.

Save the dubbing for later uses. win win.
