ok guys i know there are a few posts on here about slate drakes, but nothing that includes a tying recipe. i have never tied one as a matter of fact the only dry fly i have ever tied have been beetles and ants from kits. so i really would like a recipe with some good instructions by saturday if possible. if not guess i will head to mainstream outfitters and buy some for sunday fishing.

i googled it and not much came up, will try youtube next

first, you do this: http://bit.ly/PxI1Jz

that will produce this result: http://tinyurl.com/9ps35zd

then you observe, and then make the judgment, for YOUR scenario, you go here: http://bit.ly/PxIgEu

finally, you will end up here: http://tinyurl.com/92846hn

Google Iso fly patterns.

I use a comparadun style, a dark maroon dubbing or DRC spectramized dubbing in appropriate color and moose hair for my tails. Size 8-12 hook.

oh, i just assumed nymph. thank you, becker, for helping me read, and comprehend, the post better*.

dry is even easier, update step 3 and produce the following results, based your skill level:

basic: http://tinyurl.com/8jjvwf9
advanced: http://tinyurl.com/9bshna3

judging from the results of step 2 (http://tinyurl.com/9ps35zd), you decide that it should about yea big and about that colour.

carry on.

* - how often does someone tell you that, eh?

Thoroughly enjoyed your informative tutorial there gfen! Made me chuckle! I always enjoy your posts and sense of humor.

More better

gfen - classic, but I am never surprised by your posts. Always makes me chuckle, and I usually also learn something useful.

I 'talked' to JasonN a lot when he was still setting up TroutNut at Cornell, which is where I would haunt the Entomology Dept and raid their thesis racks.

daman - if you are ffishing this weekend where I think you are going, worry not about Slate Drakes. It's getting late in the season for them anyway where they are prevalent (in the summer).

Art Flick and for that matter, Ernie Schwiebert, thought the common Dun Variant was a good Iso dry imitation. But that was before the 'relatively' technical geek approach propagated by Swisher Richards and Caucci Nastase - that was 40+ years ago.

Charlie Meck has a nice Slate Drake pattern, which uses a bivisible hackle effect to get the Bicolor thang down.

Bert Darrow finesses Isos just by using a brown/claret bod on a scud hook with black CDC.
