My son woke me up early yesterday morning (like 3 AM), and I couldn’t go back to sleep. Had plans to fish yesterday, but closer to home originally. Figured since I was up early and had some extra time to get some driving done, I’d make my first trip of the year up north. I knew conditions would be far less than ideal, but it’s already late June and I hadn’t fished that area at all yet this year.
Ended up exploring two new to me streams in Cameron/Elk Counties. Expectedly, neither fished great, but it was nice to spend a day up north. The second I knew had some water quality issues, but it’s a fairly large watershed I wanted to check out just in case it was better than advertised. It isn’t. Saw one large Brown and caught a rogue stocker Rainbow about 2 miles up from its mouth and the nearest stocker source.
Water was low, too low for good fishing, but both had plenty to keep the fish alive. Temps were high 50’s on both. From an angling perspective we still need more rain, but I hope this eases the anxiety of fish survival. They’re fine. Got chased off the second one by a good storm that dumped pretty good for an hour or so. I scouted a neighboring third stream on the drive home for a future outing and it was enough to make that one chocolate milk.
