I met a guy on the Gunpowder last week that gave me a fly that was nothing more than a wrap of peacock with a starling hackle. Anyone know what it is called?

It is a great fly and very easy to tie. I don't know if it has a name other than peacock and starling.

Peacock and starling is the name.

Here you go. tie in some peacock for the body if you wish...

The true name for this fly is Starling & Herl soft hackle.

The fly I was given had a body of peacock and very light herl on the front only. Size 18. Very simple but effective fly.

When you say hurl do you mean hackle? If so, it all depends on the starling feather used. Most are grey, but you may also see a near black or black with Iridescent green. All would still make a starling and hurl.

Its herl for peacock herl.

I know herl means peacock hurl....cmon..... Sounds like it just has a thorax of herl not an entire bodies worth. So a light dressed starling and herl.

The latter is akin to a Stewart's Spider, where the starling is wrapped around the thread, then a whole thorax rather than just a turn and a half around the front.

This should clear things up:

"Wayne Campbell: I say hurl. If you blow chunks and she comes back, she's yours. But if you spew and she bolts, then it was never meant to be."

Troutbert, if you know so much about women, how come you're here at like the Gas 'n' Sip on a Saturday night completely alone drinking beers with no women anywhere?

(wrong movie, but it seemed apropos)

That peacock herl fly has been around so long even the Abbess thought it was old fashioned.

Was the fellow's name Jon? Just curious.

Great fly for matching grannoms (pupa) in the spring and simple to tie.
