This weekend was awesome.

My friends rented a cabin in Cooks Forest for the weekend and invited me and my girlfriend along. I strapped my canoe on the roof my truck and we headed up Friday afternoon. Saturday we did a float trip on the Clarion.

Today, before we left to come home, we decided to do some trout fishing. We ended up on the headwaters of small tributary of the Clarion river that I had fished before. The kicker is Ive never fished it with a fly rod or in the summer (I started fly fishing last year) so this was going to be a learning experience.

The air temperature was in the high 80's but the water temperature was barely 65 degrees at noon. I finally got a chance to use my 7'6" 3w rod.

We parked and there wasnt a soul to be seen anywhere. I hike about a mile and a half up stream from where I parked and about a mile down stream as well.

This was my first time chasing native brookies with success. Ive tried to fish a few streams in the Laurel Highlands without much success.

Anyways....

I hooked up with roughly 2 dozen brookies on my hike and landed 7 of them. This was an awesome learning experience for me. The more I fished, the more I started to really understand how/where they live. Some of the fish I caught came out of water less than 2" deep. This really surprised me.

Anyways, Ill let the pictures do the rest of the talking...

I caught this guy in the same stream, Im assuming he's a stocked/holdover fish. Just so happens to be the first brown on a fly rod.

I was so excited at some points I forgot to snap pictures or the ones I did snap were a complete blur.

Im honestly still surprised that I finally had such a success day chasing native fish. Today was a day of many firsts - first time successly fishing for native brookies, first time catching them on a fly rod, first time catching a brown on a fly rod, and first time fishing this late in the summer and having success.

Cheers.

Looks like you had a great time, I'm sure you'll be back for some more soon enough

Congrats, brookie fishing is a lot of fun.

Man o man, I see those stream pics and how open they are. I miss NW PA!!!! Streams farther east may have more fish, but they're typically much thicker to fish!

Don't ever be surprised to find a wild brown or two around. But yeah, that brown appears to be of stocked origins. Holdover. And if they don't stock in that area, then it's likely he came up from below to find cold water.

Thanks guys.

It was an awesome learning experience

Awesome weekend, congrats.

Thanks for sharing and glad you had a good time. Looks like a nice little stream as well.

Congratulations on the milestone.

Excellent all around. +1 for not naming that little jump-across brook, and for displaying proper handling of fish- especially trout- for catch & release.
