Mosquito Dry Fly
This is the first fly I saw when I was growing up. The fly was in a film container that my dad had with his bamboo fly rod.

Materials
Hook: Dry Fly - this is size 18
Thread: Black 6/0 or 8/0
Tail: Ewing Grizzly fibers
Body: White and Black Moose Mane Strands
Hackle: Ewing Grizzly Rooster Neck
Wing: Ewing Grizzly Hen neck tips.
I covered the body with Solarez Bone Dry.

Moose Mane floats well

Cool! I'm pretty sure my dad had a few of these, too.

If you don't have moose mane, a stripped grizzly quill works pretty for the body.

I used to tie a lot of these in sizes 12-18. I still carry some, but haven't tied one on in years.

They work -- but whoever saw an upwing mosquito?

the wing is mostly for the angler to see the fly on the water.

I don't know why it was called a mosquito, to me it is an attractor pattern.

I agree on both counts. Plus I don't think that skeeters are big on the diet of trout living in moving water in the first place.

I haven't noticed any difference in effectiveness if I omit the wing.
