Due to the recent threads about fishing midges I started looking for some new patterns.
Here are a couple I found.

I really like the first link. I tie my caddis larvae with chenille and haqve really found it effective.

Another good simple to tie midge pattern involves nothing more than wrapping any color tinsel, mylar or 8/0 tying thread around the shank of a standard 1x nymph hook (16 – 20) and then over wrapping that with a piece of 4x or 5x hard mono tippet (or midge tubing) and using the thread to form a small head.

A silver body with red or black thread head thread works well. An all red thread body/head also works well.

For the overwrap I prefer hard mono tippet, as it just seems to make the underbody color sparkle and halo more than midge tubing or soft mono tippet.

I've posted about this before, but I've caught lots of fish on a very simple pattern called a sewer fly
It's just a tiny tuft of poly wing post, and body wound of black thread. It imitates the black midge quite nicely

Here is a link to a video of Al Miller, who recently passed away, tying his Al’s Rat pattern. The pattern is just a thread body, in the color to match the naturals, and a pinch of dubbing. For midges on top I just add in a small amount of CDC or poly yarn to represent wings – that’s it. This simple pattern will take fish anywhere there are midges.

Afish,

love the al's rat been using them for some time now. Quick, easy and they really work!!

Midges are the easiest patterns to tie (IMO) less material the better. Some of my favorites, if you follow the pattern with the clear lace and colored thread underneath and palmer a hackle over like a Griffins Gnat you have a midge cluster in any color of your choice. I like red, yellow, black, white and olive in that pattern.
