My newest video is live, the Lightning Bug, new and improved. I've upgraded this fly over the years, and love this pattern more than the original. Got me thinking...which variation do you fish more than the original?

The variation with gold tinsel is sometimes sold out west as the "Gold Bug".

I'll sometimes add legs, although the version without will sink faster, which is a desirable feature for this fly.

Thanks for the heads-up, as I never heard of the Gold Bug. This one definitely sinks fast, similar to a Perdigon-style because of that skinny abdomen.

Needs a turn or two of CDC as a collar/hackle.

Would you substitute the cdc for the dubbing or use both ?

both. or could use some hares ear right behind the bead and brush it out a bit to add movement

Both. The dubbing will help the cdc stand off the fly a little.
