Pre inter-webs, this was pretty much the only technique that was widely know. Personally, I've gone to securing the hackle on the post and have never looked back. Just seems easier to trim the hackle tip and have neater results that way.
 
I pretty much tie parachutes the same way as the video.
Although after winding the hackle, I just let the hackle pliers hang down on the far side of the hook shank.
This frees up my left hand, and I use it to gently sweep the hackle fibers back some, before binding the hackle stem on the hook shank.
That keeps me from binding the fibers that I've already wound down

This is especially useful on smaller patterns
 
Interesting to watch. What I didn't quite get is why he didn't take a small wire tool and "pull" the hackle that was captured and tied down at the front?
