As part of a family vacation my son and I fished the Colorado River tailwater below the Glen Canyon Dam on 4/30. We booked the guide through Lee’s Ferry Anglers, and stayed at the Cliff Dwellers Lodge.
This was the view of the Vermillion Cliffs from the lodge before we headed to the river.
We met the guide at the Lee’s Ferry take out…
The boat was a 20 foot shallow draft high power moter boat.
Soon we started up river though the canyon…
.
I had very little experience fishing tailwters and my son had none. So this was going to be a new experience for us… The game plan was to motor up river to gravel bars or other locations that held fish in water shallow enough that a light nymph rig would work.
During the day we saw some old friends…
But most of the scenery was strange…
Rock Gap
Rock Wall
The river in this 15 mile section has a very dense population of rainbows. We both caught some…
I caught some where in the neighborhood of 30 to 40 fish between 9 and 14 inches. My son caught far fewer but did catch the biggest fish of the day. I think someone with more experince with this type of fishing and less rusty after a long winter could easily have caught twice as many and some larger fish.
At the end of the day, we were tired and beatup from the sun but happy.
