i've used them to fish under indicators or under floats on the pin, but now thinking they'd be good for tying up rough fish jig flies. yeah, OK, Fredrick got be interested catching carp....too bad we don't live near the south platte river....
my thoughts are you can drag them along the bottom without getting snagged. anyone try it? well, i'll be tying up some soon.
plastic eyes for mudders, chain link eyes for shallow, and bar-bell eyes for deeper. I have quite a few steelhead jig hooks that should hold up well. Also, throw up some pics of your jig flies too if you got them....
BTW - the fish below is saying:
Afish - I know you want me!

Depends on your venue. I typically use standard down eye nympk hooks. Mustad 3906B to be exact with bead chain eyes.Tie them on top of the shank and they'll flip point up.. If i need to go deeper I lead tape the shank. I find dumbell eye's to hit the water too hard, tends to spook the fish and they hang up alot more. Muddy bottom probably not so much a problem but can still blow them out with the splash of the heavy fly. Jig heads sound like a good idea but I think we all know how easy it is for a round shot to get wedged in between the rocks. If you need to get whatever fly deeper, just cast further ahead of the fish to get the sink rate right.
I've also had the carp take the fly on the drop before hitting bottom a few times as well. Had one chase down a white Zonker the other day while i was Smallie fishing. Food for thought.

Try putting "img" in lowercase.

Nice save......Thanks

I'll try that out.

Oh! Kahle hooks are pretty killer for carp as well with bead chain eyes tied on top.

well, here's a few I tied up to test out.

Nice ties, Keith!

SO did you catch any on them yet ?

got to get out at lunch today for 1/2 hour to try some of the flies, found lots of sunning and circulating fish, but only a few i could find feeding. I had three follows and one hook-up that was on then off pretty quick. next friday I should have some time to fish....you in? I'm thinking unami and perk ffo section. On the plus side, I think the jigs didn't hang up on the bottom as much as normal flies

Yea I should be able to come out for a few

Skil,

I have never tied using a jig hook, but I have started tying almost all of my carp flies on scud hooks typically in a size 10-6. The nice part about a scud hook is that when you add bead chain or eyes not only does it ride hook up but the tail of the fly is curved upward and will stand up as it puffs along in the silt. I actually finish the fly fairly far down the hook shank into the bend.

At the end of the day, I am not sure the carp care one way or another, but I think it gives a good profile for them to see.

Pitt,

That's exactly how I tie my carp patterns. All two of them! :)

The bassin around here has been below par, at least for me. I'm getting interested in carp now.

Yeah I pretty much made that same decision about a month ago Jay
