Where do I begin...
About a week and a half ago I posted in Stream Reports about my trip to Fishing Creek. My trip was called short because my buddy broke the tip off his brand new rod that I built him. No big deal and an easy fix. However, when we got home so I could fix it, he slammed it in the car door and lost another 5 inches. Still, with a trip the fly shop, a relatively easy fix. So I fixed it and told him to take care of it, always break it down and put it away so he doen't inadvertanly break it again. He said, "I will," then shut in the car door 2 seconds later. This time it is unrepairable. The sad thing is, he has never caught a fish on it, but has broken in 3 times.
I just want to scream!

thats why i usually buy a rod with lifetime unconditional warranty. i had to send back more than 1 rod. actually i was breaking a rod or two a year for a couple of years going.

I actually lost a section of a rod I built. Fortunately I used a standard (cheap) blank. So buying a replacement and rebuilding just the one section was an option. Could you do the same?

The top of the car is even more fatal to your stuff!!

Pad,
I believe that he is going to buy the blank over. He purchased as a kit form Cabelas and it was inexpensive; which is also the reason he bought it. Now he has to keep sticking money into it. I believe the blank is @ $35. I told him to call cabelas and see if they will sell him just the top section.

Quit fixing stuff for him. His breakage rate will probably decrease. Even it to doesn't it's his problem, not yours, so he can scream, but you can just chuckle at his bone-headedness. 🙂

I learned the hard way that you have to put the rod in the case. Always. No exceptions. Even if you are just driving a short distance to another spot 1 mile away. Put the rod in the case. Or you'll break them.

If you have one of the DB Dun style cases where you can put the rod in there with the reel still attached, you are much more likely to actually put it away then if you use an aluminum rod tube. If you have to take the reel off each time, you won't do it.

Not to sure about that either. I have one and don't always break it down to put in the tube. My 9' rest over the seats in the mini van and comes just short of the dashboard. The reel keeps it from coming any closer. Just got to watch so the back hatch stays up while putting it in or taking it out.

I've got your solution!

go out to walmart and buy a little kids sponge bob square pants fishing rod and a can of worms. Tell him next time he breaks a rod he's stuck with that one!

When my GF moved in she also brought her cat, was cleaning the rod one night and the cat is gagging, looked down and saw it bite the tip of the fly rod off.. If she wasn't so hot I would have kicked them both out
