Reading the HMH vise forums, I found out that HMH builds its Solstice model vise exclusively for L.L. Bean. It isn't for sale in the catalogue or online, but only in the L.L. Bean stores, where it retails for $79. However, the vise is included in Bean's Deluxe Fly Tying Kit (TA247609), which IS sold online and in the catalogue for $100.
I'd glanced at the photo of the kit, but I'd blown it off because I'd assumed that fly tying kits were all crap. The catalogue doesn't showcase this kit in any way.
I wish I'd paid attention to it before I started acquiring my stuff. The HMH Solstice is a fixed head vise, but the guts are the same as the other HMH vises, it comes standard with the HMH Omni jaws, and they are switchable with the other HMH jaws. That vise would suit me for the rest of my life. On close inspection, it looks like the other stuff in the kit is good as well. It's a good value for another 20 bucks. Oh, well.
