One of my Mom's neighbors knows I tie flies, and when I saw him yesterday he gave me a grey squirrel tail. I googled already, but figured I would ask you guys what kind of use I can get out of a tail like that.

Thanks.

Excellent for wings on streamers and wet flies.

Picket Pin, Picket Pin, Picket Pin, thats all I ever used them for and I always had plenty Squirrel tails. there are some nymphs that use it for tails, but I forget wat ones. you can always come up with Ideas. Most likely you have a Gray Squirrel tail, a fox squirrel tail tail has an orange color to it, there are different patterns that use them.

+1 for Picket Pin, excellent pattern.

Or you could make dubbing out of it, cut it up some and throw it into your coffee blender! Throw some antron in with it for some sparkle if you want.

Here is a link to a good looking caddis pattern using squirrel

I like squirrel tail for some pacific northwest or atlantic salmon hairwings. I don't fish them often, but I love the way they look and I love to tie them.

Muddler minnow includes a sparse underwing of grey squirrel tail.
