Here's some discussion of the topic of giant stones from a thread I started some years ago. As mentioned, I do some unscientific nymph surveys in my travels and I rarely see these nymphs. When I do, they are often in leafy or woody debris outside of the stream thalweg or main current areas, which is where one would expect to find conventional stonefly nymphs. I didn't see a single giant stone nymph in south central PA last year. Hoover mentions seeing them on Clark's Creek.
Anyway, I still carry the pattern in my nymph box and fish them with confidence... but I'm not sure how often trout around here actually key on them.
