I would like to learn how to tie. Other then a vise. what must have tools and materials for i need to get started.

any beginner books/dvds out there?

thanks!

This book and try to organize or attend something like this. Both are great ways to get started.

I see you are in Philly. If you want to meet up, I'd be glad to help you get started. shakey is a prolific tier and fellow Philadelphian as well.

frohbego - here's a great place to start:

Just click on fly tying, then beginning tying, and it will take you a whole series of articles by the late Al Campbell. Good stuff, and it's free.

JayL i will defiantly take you up on a tying lesson. I'll drop you a line once i get setup.

Thanks

I would like to buy a pedestal vise under $100. can anyone recomend a good brand and model. Its my 1st vise so i would like to get something in that price range that will last along time.

anvil makes an excellent vise for 99.00 its not a true rotary but it is very well built. they also make a rotary but 150.00 I have one and I like it very much.It comes with a pedastal and a c clamp

what does everyone think about the Dyna-King kit -

one more option - PEAK Trailhead Package \

Anvil, worth every penny you spend on it.

This is a great way to start without breaking the bank. You can upgrade like everything else later if you really need to.

the Anvil looks great too

fly-tying benchside reference for beginners

I use the Peak and have no complaints. Even if you don't use the rotary feature for tying it's still handy to flip the fly around to view different angles while tying.

So excited! i just order the Peak Rotary Vise, Dr Slick tool set and the The Orvis Fly-Tying Guide book.

Once i get the book i use it to select the materials i need for specific flies.
