Hi Guys,

I'm just wondering how people keep their trout flies at home - this winter i have bought a couple of dozen flies off the net each week since October, and now find myself with a large number (30+) of small cardboard boxes, plus my existing flies filling four C&F type fly boxes that i want to empty out organize and re-fill some.

i've been looking on amazon at Plano 3700 boxes and 974 organizers, and i've read about RIMAX boxes but can't find them online anywhere now.

this is for dry flies 22-12, nymphs, emergers and soft hackles and i want to store them lose by individual pattern n size.

a fly store tray would be great, but i guess anything wood is going to be $$$

i have the orvis magnetic boxes for my midges etc.

any suggestions or advice ?

Thanks

Mark.

I just store them in their respective fly boxes, of which I currently use 4...

1. Generic Trout (little bit of everything) - standard medium size box
2. Warmwater - standard large size box
3. Hatch Box - matches some of the larger, common PA hatches (Sulphers, MB's, GD's, SD's, Tricos) - standard medium size box
4. Brookie Streams - which is actually just an Altoid tin with a piece of foam in it.

Beyond that I have one medium Plano Box with about a dozen compartments that I keep extra spares of some of the patterns I use most...Buggers/Adams/Wulff's etc.

i have 14 of the plano 3700 bozes for some of the flies

14 boxes for "SOME" of the flies. This man does some tying. ;-)

Many of these in a large size.

Since I this article by Dave some time back, I've been using the Rimax at Home Depot.

I'll try to run by HD tomorrow and check for you. They were located in the Hardware section.

no rush, but that would be really great. Thanks Rolf !

I really need to deal with the storage issue myself. It has gotten to the point where it is faster to tie what I need than look for what I already tied, so If it's not in the flybox, I tie it. I have dozens of plastic containers, altoid tins, assorted flyboxes, a couple of cigar boxes full of ziplock bags, drawers of assorted condiment containers....
I'm seriously thinking of buyig or building one of these :

I also have to deal with material storage. The desk and binder system I use has served me well, but it is getting a bit crowded. Doesn't seem that long ago that everything fit in a single rubbermaid container!

That's not a bad idea, a little tweeking and I think that can be usable. Thanks for the link.

Fly shop owners may not like me for saying this, but I've never found better fly boxes than these

"Easy press n open buttons. Large capacity compartments. No-slip base. Contoured bottom; press n open."

Sorry but I didn't see any at HD. One other option would be to try the craft stores. I know Michael's is currently selling plastic storage boxes for 50% off. Good Luck.

you know what. i saw something very similar in Walgreens on Friday - the compartments were a little small for dries.

thanks for looking Rolf, i think i'll grab a pack of plano's and think about a wooden solution long term - i'd really like a tray like the fly stores.

yep just a few of the boxes.

Dude, I googled and found their website. WOW :-o Kinda salty...
Nice, but WOW.

yeah. expensive, and i'm scared to even ask what the postage will be from MT.

i can't find anyone on the east coast who outfits stores.

they are awesome though. i'm going to fix hinges and perspex split lids on it.

i'll keep an eye out for store liquidations, but i feel a bit like a bottom feeder lol :-(
